Part 1 - Online: Overview of Grant Programs

Structured to appeal to a broad audience, these online classes will not only introduce novice grant writers to the basic concepts surrounding the acquisition of grant funds but will also provide veterans with an opportunity to renew their knowledge and skills. Recent changes to those federal grant programs which provide the greatest source of funds will be reviewed. Information will be presented through multimedia internet-based materials.

Topics Covered: Understanding Success Factors, Overview of Public Safety Grant Programs, Identifying the Contact Persons, Information Resources, Pre-Proposal Planning Activities, Proposal Construction and Preparation, Grant Proposal Models

Part 2 – Workshop: Preparing the Proposal

The primary objective of this session will be to give the learner as much exposure to proposal development and writing as a one-day session will allow. Instructional methods will include a combination of lecture, discussion, and in-class work designed to acquaint students with the fundamentals of proposal development.

This session is specifically designed as a follow-on and complement to the online training activities outlined above. Students are expected to complete the online training prior to the workshop and these concepts will be used in the practical activities within the workshop. Practical activities will include groups working through the stages of crafting a written proposal, and class review and evaluation of sample proposals.
