A potential suicide is among one of the most emotionally challenging calls you will get. The pressure to find the right thing to say to keep the person safe can be overwhelming. Being suicidal is not a crime. There may be a public safety risk, but it needs to be seen first as a mental health issue.
This module offers specific techniques to interact with a suicidal person, building on the basic skills offered in Module 1, De-Escalation and Assessment, in addition to what to expect on a call like this, how to know if a person with suicidal thoughts requires detention, and ways to keep everyone involved safe, including yourself.
