The Guidance Center partnered with Long Beach and Los Angeles Police Departments and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to develop a series of web-based trainings for any local or state law enforcement agency across the country to use.
Autism Spectrum Disorders affect 1 in 68 children. Parents of Autistic children will tell you that their greatest fear is that their children’s actions are going to be misinterpreted by law enforcement. A person with Autism will often make what appears to be strange movements or sounds, and sometimes may even commit self-harm. While these actions might seem abnormal, they aren’t indifference or willfulness. It’s a disability.
The goal of this module is to help you understand the behavior when you see it so you can do your job safely and effectively. The module provides practical steps to de-escalate the situation and ways to effectively interact with a person who is on the Autism Spectrum.
