Learn the skills needed to keep your officers and the community safe. Roll Call Mental Health Training is a series of web-based training modules that provide officers with tools to readily identify the signs of mental illness in the field and to safely and effectively de-escalate these encounters. Funded by a grant from The Ahmanson Foundation.
The Guidance Center partnered with Long Beach and Los Angeles Police Departments and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to develop a series of web-based trainings for any local or state law enforcement agency across the country to use.
As a police officer, you will encounter people with a mental illness – sometimes on a daily basis. They might be delusional, hear voices, have bi-polar disorder, or be on the Autism Spectrum. You don’t have to be able to diagnosis the person you’ve encountered, but if you know enough about mental illnesses, it will help keep everyone safe.
The purpose of this module is to help you make an effective field assessment of people you encounter with mental illnesses. Specific non-violent de-escalation tactics and ways to assess whether a person needs to be put on a psychiatric hold are covered.
